GHFRD was formed in June 1996, though active work began in the year 2000 with an overall aim of promoting human rights and sustainable livelihood development. Having realized the impact of nature on human rights and livelihoods, the organization changed its focus to nature conservation by creating education awareness, research, restoration, sustainable practices and support for advocacy strategies, relevant to specific conservation needs and to the needs of rural communities in Kasese District, through involvement of communities in managing natural resources, conserving biodiversity, and mitigating the impacts of human activities on the environment based on human rights and sustainable livelihoods perspective in Kasese and the Rwenzori region in General.
It was founded by six persons who had trained in various fields, namely as social workers, legal aid officers, and as children rights activists. They realized the need to have interventions on environment and livelihoods for co-existence and improving the quality of lives of children and young people.
